Inherited Diseases
Social Awareness Campaign

2021

THE CHALLENGE //

MY SOLUTION //

Choose a relevant social health issue and visualize the data available to raise awareness for the issue so that the audience understands the importance of the topic. Create a poster and a user-centered innovative design to promote the issue.
I collected data on multifactorial diseases in the United States; diseases that are genetically inherited and influenced by environmental and lifestyle factors. I spread awareness and encouraged action, especially for young adults. My final design highlights the prevalence, deaths, new cases, and cost of each disease to stress the widespread health issue.
HAND & DIGITAL SKETCHES //
First, I began with sketching loose ideas for data visualization before I collected all of the data that I would need.
DATA GATHERING //
I then gathered my data from various sources (listed at the bottom of the poster) to organize and refine the areas that I wanted to highlight. I focused on the five most prevalent multifactorial diseases in America: Heart Disease, Diabetes, Cancer, Obesity, and Asthma.
 FINAL POSTER DESIGN //
After several iterations and detailed tweaks, I perfected my final design to highlight the data visualization and be easily understood to the viewer. I included a breakdown of more data based on gender and ethnicity in the bottom left corner of the poster.
USER-CENTERED DESIGN
SKETCHES //
The next portion of this project required me to think of a user experience that could physically aid the user in understanding the issue and taking action. I sketched ideas for product packaging, a kiosk installation, and an interactive screen that would ask lifestyle questions to determine if the person was at risk for inherited diseases.
FLOOR INSTALLATION //
The first part of the user-centered design is the floor installation that leads the user to the kiosk within a pharmacy.
INTERACTIVE PHARMACY KIOSK //
The next portion of the user-centered design is the kiosk design that features the interactive screen and packaging setup.
INTERACTIVE SCREEN //
The interactive screen asks a series of 10 questions to the user about their lifestyle factors to determine if they could be at risk for an inherited disease. The ultimate goal is to lead the user to purchase the test kit and get full genetic testing done.
INHERITEST PACKAGING //
The quiz encourages the user to purchase the test kit which sits right next to the kiosk.
FULL EXPERIENCE MOCKUP //
This video demonstrates the experience of the user as they enter the pharmacy and reach the floor installation all the way to the packaging design. The full experience aims to educate, inform, and promote the user to take control of their health.
